History of E

Emotionology TM is a synthesis of other research and discoveries. Originally, James R. Bettman (1979) discovered the way we process information and how memory works. Later Dr. Candace Pert added more understanding with her book "Molecules of Emotion" (1999) and this was graphically demonstrated in the movie "What the Bleep Do We Know”. Pert completed what we know to really understand what emotions are and how they are our body chemistry. NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming gives us many techniques and tools to change those emotions. “The Course In Miracles” is the basis of some of the philosophy that makes “E” coaching work.

Mary Hallgren began as a trainer in NLP in the 80s and added other information and knowledge she gained from other fields in the beginning as she developed Emotionology – the science of emotions. Techniques and processes were collected from many sources besides NLP. After years of working with individuals and groups she discovered the models used today in Emotionology coaching.

As a knowledge base, Emotionology fits best with Positive Psychology, which focuses on overcoming learned helplessness and depression, and on developing an optimistic, rather than a pessimistic, point of view. However, Emotionology is not psychology or therapy. It is not for the purpose of diagnosing or treating what is wrong with you. What we can do is help you develop skills and find your own solutions to problems, feelings and situations that bother you.

Richard Long

richard LongIn the history of Emotionology TM we must also include Dr Richard Long. Richard is a life-long learner, continually exploring and promoting ideas that can benefit humanity. He has a pioneering spirit and fancies himself as “Merlin at Large”.

Richard met Mary Hallgren about 10 years ago while he was managing the Reflexology Center in Lakewood, CO. He read her first book and immediately recognized the value of the philosophy and approach of Emotionology for others. Richard invited Mary to do mini workshops for the Center’s reflexology group. Through the years, Richard maintained his interest in Emotionology. In 2006 he realized that spreading the ideas of Emotionology would be a way to put his money to good use. Thus, he took Emotionology under his wing for a while to get it going. Richard approached Mary and generously offered support. He wanted to make Emotionology available to the entire world but remain behind the scenes as “Merlin”. Richard has influenced the formation of the Institute. His input, contributions and support is gratefully appreciated.
